Wellesley Scholarship Foundation (WSF) will soon be accepting applications for the scholarships which will be given for the college year 2018-2019. WSF provides college scholarships to residents of Wellesley who attend undergraduate programs and have financial need. A four member sub-committee of Trustees oversees the annual review and selection of scholarship recipients. All financial information is held in strict confidence and only viewed by this four member committee.
In 2017, WSF awarded $300,000 in need-based awards to 84 students. These scholarships are funded by donations to WSF and our investment income. In addition, each year WSF awards new merit scholarships to one female and one male graduating high school senior in recognition of outstanding achievement and citizenship. These merit scholarships are funded entirely from restricted bequests and not general donations. In all instances, WSF scholarships may be renewed annually.
WSF awards its need-based scholarships to students who have directly applied for financial aid from all the colleges/universities to which they have also applied for admission. WSF considers a student’s unmet need after accounting for need and merit based financial aid offered by a student’s chosen college/university or in some instances other substantial scholarships offered to a student. Applicants should submit the WSF scholarship application by our February 1st deadline. Once the student has decided which college or university s/he will attend, the student will be required to share with WSF a copy of the financial aid award letter provided by the educational institution s/he intends to attend. WSF will then strive to meet the student’s unmet need after assessing the financial aid package provided by this educational institution. WSF strives to meet unmet need based on the financial aid and, if applicable, merit award package from this institution.
WSF determines unmet need using the CSS/Financial Aid Profile. All financial information is kept strictly confidential. Scholarship amounts based on the aforementioned need are communicated by the end of May and are awarded at the Annual WSF Awards Ceremony in June. Scholarships may range in size from $500 to $10,000 annually. It is necessary to apply annually for all awards and to complete all necessary information and/or essay submissions, as required. In addition, WSF administers applications for the Kiwanis Club, Wellesley Toyota-Scion, the Town of Wellesley Scholars Awards, the Town of Wellesley War Memorial, the Wellesley Cancer Prevention Project, the Wellesley Cooperative Clothing Exchange, Wellesley Hills Woman’s Club, the Wellesley Historical Society, the Wellesley Patrolmen’s Association, the Wellesley Women’s Club, and the Wellesley Square Merchants Association.
The Margaret Daniels Scholarship for women and the Donald P. Babson Scholarship for men are endowed merit-based awards also administered by WSF. Each year a scholarship is awarded to a graduating male and female high school student and is renewable for the recipient’s four years of college. Only high school seniors are eligible to apply for these merit scholarships which are awarded for all four years of undergraduate study. (Learn more about Named Awards.)
